How local governments can help solve
global problems

Buildings are a significant energy consumer and emitter in Australia, responsible for half of the energy use and nearly a quarter of emissions. Enhancing energy efficiency in buildings presents a cost-effective path to reducing emissions, potentially saving $20 billion in energy costs and cutting 64 million tonnes of emissions by 2050. Local governments play a crucial role in this shift, with some already pioneering efforts to make every building count, as discussed with Katy Dean, our Senior Policy Adviser, on their contributions to sustainability.
To enhance sustainability in Australia's built environment, the Green Building Council and Property Council have introduced recommendations through "Every Building Counts For Local Governments." This initiative, complementing reports for federal and state levels, advises local governments on adopting zero-carbon standards and supports the transition to high-performance buildings.

With an emphasis on electrification and reducing emissions, the report advocates for sustainable building practices and provides a roadmap for local government action, aiming to influence policy and encourage community-wide improvements in sustainability.
