Cleantech Network and Aspire Join Forces - An EOI for the State Government’s Circular Economy Investment Program has been submitted to apply for funding to map our circular economy ecosystem to identify opportunities for innovation and develop the region's capabilities in this sector.
The project is commercially viable and critical, leveraging successful national and international circular economy initiatives. Projects like the UK's WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s circular economy models demonstrate significant economic and environmental benefits through enhanced resource optimisation. By focusing on plastics, e-waste, and construction materials—sectors with high environmental impact and potential for reuse—the CESQ project aligns with global best practices to achieve substantial commercial returns.
Product or Material Complexity:
Plastics, e-waste, and construction materials present varying degrees of complexity. Plastics require sophisticated sorting and processing technologies; e-waste involves recovering valuable metals and components, often necessitating specialised handling; construction materials need deconstruction techniques to reclaim reusable components. The project's comprehensive approach addresses these complexities, ensuring effective reuse.
Analysis of Existing Solutions in Queensland:
Queensland currently lacks integrated solutions for comprehensive recycling and reuse of these materials. Existing efforts are fragmented, with limited collaboration among stakeholders. The project fills this gap by creating a unified system involving councils, businesses, and educational institutions supported by robust governance and regulatory frameworks.
Regional Benefits:
The project will provide significant regional benefits, including environmental sustainability through waste reduction and lower emissions from supply chains, economic growth by creating new business opportunities, and enhanced community engagement in sustainable practices. It will also position SEQ as a leader in circular economy initiatives, attracting further investment and innovation.
Employment and Skills Development:
The project will create green jobs, ranging from technical roles to community engagement and education positions. Skills development will be a key focus, with workshops and training programs enhancing local workforce capabilities in sustainable practices and circular economy principles. This will ensure long-term sustainability and adaptability of the regional economy, preparing it for future challenges and opportunities.
We are excited about this project as a step towards environmental stewardship, ecosystem mapping and a catalyst for economic resilience and innovation in Queensland.
