Australia's Bioenergy Roadmap

The Australia Bioenergy Roadmap aims to enhance the growth of Australia's bioenergy sector and position bioenergy as a key component in the country's future energy mix. Developed through extensive consultation with industry, government, researchers, and the public, the roadmap highlights bioenergy’s potential to deliver lower emissions, regional growth, energy resilience, and waste management benefits. By 2030, the bioenergy sector could contribute approximately $10 billion annually to GDP, create 26,200 new jobs, reduce emissions by about 9%, and divert an additional 6% of waste from landfills, supporting both economic growth and environmental sustainability .
The roadmap identifies key areas where bioenergy has a comparative advantage, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors such as renewable industrial heat, aviation, and renewable gas grid injection.

It emphasizes the importance of leveraging waste and residue resources to avoid methane emissions from waste decomposition and underscores the role of bioenergy in enhancing liquid fuel security by reducing reliance on imported petroleum products. To realize these benefits, the roadmap outlines a framework for policy and investment decisions, encouraging industry and government collaboration to overcome current barriers, drive commercial outcomes, and inform the broader community about bioenergy’s potential.
